Living in Rapid City
Rapid City SD is one of those cities that is big enough to get what you need, but small enough to still be a community you are proud to be a part of.
Some of our favorite things about Rapid City is downtown, with its unique shops, local restaurants, and Main Street Square, the parks, biking path, hiking trails, and the babbling Rapid Creek that runs through the city.
The Black Hills are on the western edge – you can be alone on a path in the Hills in under an hour! We enjoy the drier climate that is part of our own banana belt. It’s not uncommon to see some 50 degree days in the middle of the winter.
The 2010 Census shows a total population of 67,956 people within city limits with a median age of 35.6. If you consider the surrounding communities, it gets closer to the 100,000 mark.
Rapid City Economy
Rapid City enjoys a robust economy with the a trade radius of about 200 miles. Concerts, events such as the Home Show and Stock Show, and our semi-professional hockey team the Rapid City Rush, bring in people from our surrounding area.
Plus, the Rapid City Regional Hospital, big box store retail stores and mall, fairgrounds, and general tourist attraction of the Black Hills keep the Rapid City hub busy.
Rapid City is home to Black Hills Corporation (parent of Black Hills Power), Greentree, Asurion, Assurant, and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. With the Ellsworth Air Force Base residing just to the east in Box Elder, we see military members live and play in Rapid City as well.
Rapid City real estate maintains strong and generally raising in values. Even during the housing crisis of 2008, our values only went down around 6% – compared to over 50% in much of the country.
There is a broad selection of homes – from single family residences on private lots and yards, to townhomes and condominium style buildings.
Come and see what fun we have just on the edge of the Black Hills!
